17 February 2010

Been a while, I know. Valentine's Day, Mardi Gra, President's Day, Winter Olympics, Black History Month,..my, so much to do, so little time! Are you, in addition to all this, receiving ashes or beginning intentional spiritual discipline? February, for several million Christians world-wide, ushers in "Lent" and 40 days of preparation culminating by remembering Jesus' death and resurrection. With all that's already going on, where and how does this fit in?

Holy rest, a break with the usual and a break from all the clamoring stuff, invites us into emotional and mental refuge. Think of "Lent" as bubble bath for the soul. Treat yourself to 1 moment a day for 40 consecutive days. Soak and salve yourself. Rejoice in your body, feel glad for your mind, give thanks for your friends and remember your innocence.

If holy rest reconnects and restores, then we have something like resurrection, and the sweet taste of Hot Cross Buns, and the grace of love. Blessings.

Peace,

Arlen G. Vernava
